Flag flies for Korean War veteran
NEW BEDFORD — The 438th American flag to fly atop Old Glory Tower in the city's North End in March honored the memory of Korean War veteran Joseph Freitas Jr., formerly of New Bedford, who died on July 19, 1998.
A lifelong resident of the city, Freitas served in the Navy during the Korean War and was a member of the Andrews Dahill Post 1531 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was employed by J.C. Rhodes for many years as a plant manager until his retirement in 1992.
Joseph Theodore, 91, a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient, began the practice of flying veterans' flags above Old Glory Tower 37 years ago.
Since that day, 438 flags have waved from the tower overlooking Interstate 195, each illuminated to allow it to fly 24 hours a day.
He has enlisted the help of Linda Ferreira, a marketing representative at Ashley Ford in New Bedford, to research the life histories of area veterans, and Paul Neary, general manager of the dealership, to raise the memorial flags on the veterans' behalf.
